A total of 2,458 residents of Humboldt County have tested positive for COVID-19, after 31 new cases were reported today.
Humboldt County Public Health and local suppliers resumed use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine lot 041L20A after the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced it was safe to administer.
The CDPH had asked counties to suspend use of the batch when seven vaccinated at one location in San Diego had severe allergic reactions. The agency, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and Moderna, found that there was “no scientific basis for extending the break.”
Humboldt County health worker Dr Ian Hoffman said he was grateful to the state for moving quickly to ensure the safety of the vaccine supply and added he was delighted to resume distribution of all available vaccines. “There is a system in place to detect any problem with the vaccine, and that system has worked,” he said. “Public health has 3,170 doses to administer. Over 2,500 of them have been affected by this break – 600 first doses and 1900 second doses – and we want people to know they are safe. The remainder of the Moderna batch has been distributed to local health care providers and all are ready to resume administration of these doses.
“Given the severity of this pandemic, any delay in vaccination is significant, so we are happy to resume our plans for vaccinating the elderly,” said Dr Hoffman.
On Wednesday, 285 people were vaccinated at public health vaccination clinics with around 290 additional vaccinations expected to be given today and around 400 appointments scheduled for Friday. Local health care providers also continue to provide vaccines to their patients. Appointments are by invitation only and are currently a priority for phase 1A health workers who have not received their first dose and residents over 75 years of age.
Providers authorized to administer the vaccine will contact their patients over 75 years of age directly as the vaccine becomes available. For those who do not have a provider or whose doctor is not a licensed vaccinator, the Humboldt County Joint Information Center is developing an online interest form that individuals must submit to be notified when appointments are made. you vaccination are available for their priority group. Additional information on the interest form will be released next week.
