The deaths of four Humboldt County residents from COVID-19 were reported today, including two in their 60s, one in their 60s and one over the age of 80. Staff at the Department’s Operations Center share their sympathies with family, friends and caregivers of those who have passed away.

Thirty-five new cases have also been reported in the county, bringing the total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus to 8,833. Two hospitalizations were also reported, including one in his sixties and one over the age of 80.

Since the last weekly data update on October 1, the county has registered 238 new cases. Eight deaths were reported during that same period, including five who were fully immunized. The average age of post-vaccinated deaths is 79 years, while the average age of deceased and unvaccinated people is 65.

Of the 11 hospitalizations reported in the past week, three have been fully vaccinated, seven have not been vaccinated and one is under investigation. The age ranges of reported hospitalizations are as follows:

  • 1 person in their forties
  • 3 people in their fifties
  • 5 people in their sixties
  • 1 person of 70 years old
  • 1 person over 80 years old.

The seven-day average case rate in Humboldt County is currently 22, which means that per 100,000 people, about 22 people have tested positive daily in the past seven days, although this rate varies widely depending on vaccination status. The graph below illustrates the average weekly case rates among unvaccinated and fully vaccinated local residents. View a more detailed description of the case rate graph.

As the graph illustrates, the seven-day average case rate increased among residents unvaccinated for the first time in five weeks to 42 per 100,000 residents, from 35 per 100,000 residents the previous week. The seven-day average case rate for vaccinated residents fell further from its peak rate of 29 per 100,000 in early August to 8 per 100,000 residents. The rates for both groups remain higher than those for winter and spring.

While some people who are fully vaccinated will become infected with the virus, health officials widely agree that vaccination is the best way to prevent serious consequences. People who are immunocompromised may need an additional dose to generate a sufficient immune response. Authorities are urging people who are immunocompromised to ask their primary care provider if an extra dose is right for them. As always, the county’s vaccination and screening services are available free of charge.

Appointments for Public Health vaccination clinics are not mandatory but are recommended due to increased demand for reminders and additional doses. Register in advance at MyTurn.ca.gov. For instructions in English and Spanish on using My Turn, visit humboldtgov.org/VaccineInfo.
