New cases of mutated COVID-19 involving the so-called ‘Super Strain’ “which got on a plane in the UK and flew to New York” have been reported in the Hudson Valley.
Two new cases have been reported of the British strain, which is more transmissible but not more deadly, were reported in Westchester, New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday January 22.
“The British strain has spread,” he said during a COVID-19 briefing on Friday. “It should never have been here. If the federal government had done the tests and quarantine warrants that other countries have done, it would not have been, but here we are.
The state now has up to 25 confirmed cases of the mutated virus across New York after five new infections were confirmed this week in Westchester, Long Island and Brooklyn.
The latest cases, announced Friday, were two in Westchester and one in Brooklyn.
Cuomo did not announce the exact locations of the new cases in Westchester and Brooklyn.
“The new varieties are scary,” Cuomo added. “The British strain… the Brazilian strain… the South African strain… and there will be more, I’d bet.
Although the UK strain is no more deadly than the original strain, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that preliminary evidence shows there may be new evidence that it is in fact more deadly.
“We were informed today that in addition to spreading faster, it also now appears that there is evidence that the new variant – the variant which was first discovered in London and the south – east (from England) – could be associated with a higher death rate, ”he said at a press conference.
“If you took … a man in his sixties, the average risk is that for every 1,000 people infected, about 10 would unfortunately die from the virus,” he added. “With the new variant, for every 1,000 people infected, around 13 or 14 people could die.”
Cuomo said the Wadsworth Center has tested other mutated strains outside the UK, although this has not yet been confirmed.
“So far the mutated strains are different and more dangerous than this British strain,” Cuomo said. “It’s only a matter of time until there is a much more lethal strain, and unfortunately I believe a vaccine resistant strain should be anticipated.
Cuomo noted that the CDC says the British strain could overtake the original strain as early as March, potentially causing the state’s COVID-19 positive infection rate to increase, which has slowly plummeted.
“That’s how fast it spreads, so you can see the infection rate increase,” he says. “So we’re going to adjust. We are at war with COVID and it’s a fluid situation. In war, when an enemy moves, you move. They try a new tactic, you try a new tactic, and that adaptability is very important.
“You can never be arrogant with COVID.”
