Some Delaware residents received the long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine at a mass vaccination event over the weekend – although they are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, according to health officials from the state.

“We are still in Group 1a and the vaccines today were supposed to be given to health workers and first responders,” Schwartzkopf said in a Facebook post on Saturday.
“A few people passed by and should have been challenged, but it wasn’t mainly because the immunization staff are volunteers and they didn’t have access to a database to verify that they were the first responders, ”added Schwartzkopf. “Others came in and got the shot because friends … called them or posted them online and told them to come get the shot because they got theirs.”
“By the end of the day, the first responders arriving had slowed down and a decision was made to try to bring in people 65 or older,” Schwartzkopf said in the post.

Reports of those currently ineligible to receive the vaccine at the event over the weekend also led to a response from the Delaware Division of Public Health, which said “protocols will be tightened” for the event that will continue until Monday.
