The border patrol typically does not test migrants when they are initially taken into custody – instead, they are tested when transferred to either Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) custody. they are unaccompanied children, or to non-governmental organizations if they are part of a family unit for transport to the United States

The Biden administration is struggling to contain the crisis on the southern border, which has seen more than 188,000 migrants encountered in June alone, including a 25% increase in the number of family units encountered.

Currently, the majority of people we meet are turned away because of the Title 42 public health protections put in place under the Trump administration. Just under 105,000 of those encounters in June resulted in an expulsion from Title 42.

However, the Biden administration does not refuse unaccompanied children or most migrant families (only 8,000 encounters out of more than 55,000 migrant family encounters resulted in an expulsion of Title 42).

In addition, Title 42 is reportedly scheduled to end for migrant families later this month, with other reports suggesting it would be removed completely for single adults soon after.

Republicans and former Trump officials have warned of the potential public health consequences if this were to happen, noting that many countries from which migrants have traveled often lag behind the United States in terms of vaccinations.

“Mexico is not where we are, the Northern Triangle countries are not where we are, there are several countries in the Western Hemisphere that are not where America is in regarding vaccines and COVID management, “former actor CBP commissioner Mark Morgan told Fox News this month.

“But they’re still going to open it up for people from those countries to come in, cross over to our country and allow them in – it absolutely puts the lives of Americans in danger and shows once again that this administration is putting the ‘America last and everyone first. ”
