I work in an assisted living center and retirement home in Buffalo, New York. I’m a wellness leader, which means I run fitness classes, give presentations, host games, and help create a monthly plan. I also kick bingo. Back in the days of Covid, a lot of my job was to help residents deal with loneliness.

Sixty residents live in the retirement home. Since March, none of them have been able to visit their families. Group activities are limited to eight people, all six feet apart, with masks and hand sanitizer on hand. They eat their meals in their rooms and watch television all night long. Most of the time, they hardly see or speak to anyone. It is extremely lonely and many of them have deteriorated in their health. Try as I might, there are some voids that I just can’t fill.
