MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – As the holiday weekend draws to a close, Minnesota health officials have reported 8,953 more COVID cases and 57 deaths.
According to the latest data from the Minnesota Department of Health, the new infections bring the state’s total positive COVID-19 cases to 312,969.
Today, a total of 3,578 people have died from the virus in Minnesota, of which 2,407 are in long-term care.
As part of the state’s fight against the virus, free community testing sites continue to open. There are also free COVID tests that you can order from home. In the past 24 hours, the state processed a record 97,733 tests, bringing the total number of Minnesotans tested to more than 2.5 million.

Officials are concerned about the impact of increasing COVID cases on the state’s hospital systems, as they already feel the pressure to care for so many sick patients. As of Thursday, there were 1,785 people in Minnesota hospitals, including 386 in intensive care. Data shows that nearly 80% of the critical care beds available in the state are in use.
According to the state’s Dial Back Dashboard, Minnesota’s average seven-day test positivity rate is 13.8% as of Nov. 17, due to lag in data. The number fell by 15.4% reported on Nov. 11, although any rate above 10% places the state in a “high risk” status.
