Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement during a press briefing Monday.
Starting February 22, night-time shutdown times will be adjusted from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. instead of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
“The COVID numbers are going down, so we are adjusting, we have adjusted the indoor meals, the curfew, today we will be discussing the MTA and increasing the capacity,” Cuomo said.
The governor said that during these night hours, trains would still be cleared and disinfected.
“The CDC says it, health experts say, the COVID virus is not transmitted as much as it initially suggested on surfaces but it can still be transmitted,” Cuomo said. “You want to be safe from crime and COVID in the MTA system. When you are as old as I am, trains have never been as clean as they are now.”
The closure of the metro overnight has been going on for almost 10 months. Acting transit president Sarah Feinberg said adjustments to the night shutdown were starting to look for a return to normal.
“We have planned our own reopening and returning to night service and have determined that a shortened night shutdown is an important step towards a return to 24 hour service,” said Feinberg. “To be clear, we will continue our cleaning program, we will continue to clean and disinfect our system 24 hours a day.”
Feinberg said the MTA is confident it can maintain the cleaning and disinfection it has been able to do so far.
