Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Slammed the $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill passed by Senate Democrats on Saturday, listing a number of convicted murderers who would receive stimulus checks in under the bill.

House Democrats plan to offer their final approval of the bill on Tuesday before sending it to President Biden’s office. The bill includes stimulus checks of $ 1,400 for people earning less than $ 75,000.

Inmates are included among those receiving stimulus checks, just as they were in the two previous Covid relief bills which offered checks for $ 1,200 and $ 600. Cotton voted for both of these bills.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., Cotton and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, proposed a floor amendment on Saturday to block prisoner checks. He failed on an online party vote, 49-50. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Argued that the children of prisoners could be affected by withholding money from them.

“Inmates have all of their living and medical expenses paid by the taxpayer, they don’t pay taxes, they don’t contribute to the tax base, they can’t be unemployed. Inmates are not economically affected by Covid, ”Cassidy argued. .

The IRS had tried to withhold stimulus checks from incarcerated people, but a court forced their hand to offer the checks in October. There was nothing written in the two previous relief bills or in the one passed on Saturday against inmates receiving checks.
