More than 20 million people in the UK have now received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, the Health Secretary said.
Matt Hancock posted a video on his Twitter account with the announcement and thanked “everyone who showed up to receive the jab.”
He said: “I am absolutely delighted that over 20 million people have been vaccinated across the UK – it is absolutely fantastic.
“I want to thank everyone who has come forward to receive the jab, as we know with growing confidence that the jab protects you, it protects your community and it is also the solution for all of us.
Nadhim Zahawi, the Minister of Vaccines, also celebrated the news by tweeting: “BINGO! A score of over 20,000,000 people were vaccinated (1st dose). What a success for February 2021. What a team! I am proud to be with you on this journey. “
The figure for the number of people receiving their first dose of the vaccine on Saturday was 19.6 million.
NHS England said two million more people, aged 60 to 63, were about to receive invitations to be vaccinated.
This next cohort will start receiving letters starting Monday explaining how they can make an appointment to get a shot.
Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Director of the NHS, said: “The NHS vaccination program, the largest in the history of the health service and the fastest in Europe, is getting better and better.
“I want to thank my colleagues in the NHS, as well as all the volunteers and others working on the program, for their hard work which has resulted in more than 17 million hits in just a few weeks.
“I urge everyone who has been invited to accept the offer – no matter when you have been invited, you can always come forward and protect yourself and others.
