Dez Bryant is back in the NFL, and officially after catch his first pass (s) since 2017 to solidify his comeback in Week 11 against the Tennessee Titans. After signing the legendary Dallas Cowboys wide receiver to the practice squad in late October, the Baltimore Ravens elevated him to the active roster twice before finally deciding to add him permanently – as allowed. changed 2020 practice squad rules. Bryant was emotional after signing with the Ravens this season and wasted no time speaking out following the team’s initial decision to activate him on November 7 – taking more steps to get to where he is is right now.
“I told you I’m covered confident and grateful,” said Bryant, via Twitter. “I don’t care who hates[s] he.”
One person who doesn’t hate him at all is owner Jerry Jones, who has a special relationship with Bryant after trading in the 2011 NFL Draft to select him with the 24th pick overall. The latter went on to set franchise records for the team – his 73 touchdown total is still the highest in Cowboys history – and it was especially difficult for Jones to part ways with Bryant after the 2017 season. two remained close despite Bryant’s shots at Jason Garrett and the coaching staff after the split, and remain so to this day. Jones is about to receive his first dose of what it feels like to play against Bryant though, and he’s hoping the Cowboys high school is ready to take on one of his living legends.
“Dez has an everlasting light of good, and I mean that,” Jones told the Fan 105.3FM ahead of the upcoming game with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday night. “If you like a competitor, or if you like someone who is not doing everything they can, it’s about competing. He has the best interests of his teammates. [at heart] – great teammate. Dez is an eternal light of positivity for our game.
“I couldn’t be happier to see him on the pitch. Now I’m going to be a little worried because I know how that rascal can get up there and take a ball.”
Bryant ended his career with the Cowboys after not only catching the aforementioned 73 touchdowns (1st), but his 7,487 receiving yards are the fifth most in team history. Time and time again, Bryant invented electrical outlets when Jones and the Cowboys needed them most, and he almost joined Tony Romo in bringing the Cowboys to their first NFC conference game in two decades with one of them, if not for a review reversal in moments of decline against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC division round – after the capture was initially declared a take on the field.
So, yeah, Jones is very well aware of what Bryant is capable of, because although he’s a little older now, the fiery three-time Pro Bowler always finds other gear when there’s a chip on his shoulder. And as much as he still loves Jones, Bryant would love nothing better than to prove to the Cowboys that he still has juice. This is especially true after having pressured so feverishly to join the team in 2020 following the Cowboys’ divorce from Garrett, but while they were suddenly and surprisingly open to the idea, it never materialized.
Whether the Cowboys were ever really close to bringing Bryant back before drafting CeeDee Lamb and giving him No.88 is too close a topic for Jones to discuss, and so he won’t.
“Look, I don’t want to go into this because of the personal nature,” said the Hall of Fame owner. “It was a very personal thing for me, more than usual, when we went through this time and this change. Dez and I had spent some of our – my best times – years as you will. But we had a great time. part of our best overall on and off the pitch, so I wouldn’t want to get into the closeness or anything like that.
“It hurt not to, because of the things I say, it hurt not to have Dez.”
And if the struggling Cowboys high school – now absent Trevon Diggs – can’t fight him, Bryant could show the Cowboys an “ X ” or two on Tuesday, adding another notch to his return to the NFL.
