The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that they signed offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to a multi-year contract extension.
Early in the day ESPN Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder reported that Moore was to stay in Dallas despite reported mutual interest between himself and Boise State regarding his alma mater’s open head coach position.
On that front, Moore offered the following comments in the Cowboys’ statement announcing the move.
“I will no longer pursue the head coach position at Boise State,” said Moore. “I love Boise State. I will always support them, and hope to one day be part of the program again.
Bruce feldman of The Athletic provided more context regarding Moore’s decision.
“I had heard that Kellen Moore wouldn’t even have considered other college jobs at this point, but the fact that it was Boise State he had to be thinking about given his connection to the place,” Feldman tweeted .
Moore, 32, was Boise State’s quarterback from 2008-2011, completing 69.8 percent of his passes for 14,667 yards and 142 touchdowns and leading the Broncos to a 50-3 record. The Broncos have finished in the Associated Press Top 10 three times, including going 14-0 in 2009.
Moore was a quarterback or a member of the training team for the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys from 2012 to 2017 before retiring and joining the Dallas coaching staff as a coach. quarterbacks in 2018. He was promoted to offensive coordinator a year later and remained with the team in 2020 despite Dallas choosing to replace head coach Jason Garrett with Mike McCarthy.
Fox Sports’ Jay glazer reported last Sunday that Moore was “torn” between Dallas and Boise State, who also reportedly sought former BSU linebacker (and Oregon defensive coordinator) Andy Avalos for the gig. NFL Network Ian Rapoport the Avalos news reported.
Glazer said Moore loves Boise State, but a faster path to becoming an NFL head coach was available by staying in Dallas.
Moore and the Cowboys have a big game Sunday against the New York Giants. A win and loss for the Washington football team to the Philadelphia Eagles will give Dallas the NFC East title.
The Cowboys enter Week 17 on a three-game winning streak in which they average 36 points per game.
