What started out as a routine Tuesday morning has turned into anything but the Dallas Cowboys. Boasting a well-deserved victory after their 31-28 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11, the team were all smiles, including an update to owner Jerry Jones’ radio address on Tuesday morning. Moments after Jones finished his interview, however, the team announced that there would be no media practice or availability from anyone in the organization. This was due to what was originally described as an unrelated COVID medical emergency with one of the team’s staff.
Markus Paul, the team’s strength and conditioning coach, needed an ambulance and immediately received medical attention in what has become a very moving scene for the Cowboys and their players. Despite premature and inaccurate information about his death, Paul remained at Plano Presbyterian Hospital overnight to undergo further testing, but the team announced Wednesday evening that Paul had died.
Owner Jerry Jones has released the following statement:
“The loss of a family member is a tragedy, and Markus Paul was a loved and valued member of our family. He has been a pleasant and calming influence in our Strength Room and throughout The Star. His Passion. for his work and his enthusiasm for life have earned him a lot of respect and admiration from all of our players and the entire organization. We offer our love and support to his family in this very difficult time. hearts are broken for his family and all those whose lives he touched and improved. “
The sentiments were echoed by head coach Mike McCarthy:
“We extend our love, strength and support to Markus’ family during this most difficult time and ask that his privacy be respected in the future. Markus Paul was a leader in this building. He won respect and attention from the players because he cared so much about himself, and was a naturally gifted communicator – both personally and professionally. He handled every situation, sometimes with a smile and a pat on the back , and sometimes with tough love. He had an innate toughness in a job that required qualifying, and he was admired throughout the NFL by his peers and the players he coached. It was a privilege to working with him as a coach and laughing with him as a friend. Markus did everything the right way. “
Paul joined the Cowboys as a strength and conditioning coach in 2018 under Jason Garrett, and has been retained by Mike McCarthy this season, despite a list of sweeping changes in other areas of training. A former Syracuse goalie, he was selected in the fourth round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, spending several seasons with them before ending his playing career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would go on to have huge success as the New England Patriots’ assistant strength and conditioning coach after a short stint with the New Orleans Saints, joining the Cowboys in 2018 with five Super Bowl rings on his resume – after sharing time with the New York Jets and the New York Giants.
Highly respected in the league and most certainly in the Cowboys locker room, it is with a heavy heart that the team must now figure out how to mentally carry Paul’s death while trying to prepare for their second battle with the football team. from Washington to Thanksgiving – – probably hoping to win for him in the future.
