The Dallas Cowboys are spoiled for choice as wide receiver with Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup. The latter is entering his fourth season in the NFL and playing for a new contract.
With that comes the motivation for Gallup to have their best season yet, as the opportunity to cash in their first major salary looms on the horizon. If so, does that mean he’s going to pull out of Dallas? It is very possible.
Gallup has improved every season since joining the NFL in 2018. After 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, Gallup more than doubled his output in the second year with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns, and he did so with Cooper himself having nearly 1,200 yards.
Gallup’s 2020 numbers shouldn’t mislead anyone. Yes, he finished with 59 receptions for 843 yards and five touchdowns. However, these figures need to be put in context. Gallup was in the pace for 1,100 yards in the first four games with a healthy Dak Prescott, and the fact that he finished just 157 yards under 1,000 playing with three substitute level quarterbacks or worse testifies to his talent.
Given that the defenses will have to plan the game for Cooper and Lamb, who are expected to make a jump in their second season, Gallup might have more one-on-one opportunities that could lead to some big plays, especially with a Prescott in good health in the center.
Gallup is the Cowboys second or third receiving option, he could be No.1 in another uniform. Every season, due to contract situations or simply a lack of talent in their roster, some teams are looking for a top option at wide receiver. If Gallup has a big campaign in 2021, it could force a desperate organization to offer a royal ransom for its services and end its days with the Cowboys.
The former Colorado State Ram is hoping his future is with the Cowboys, which he mentioned last month.
“You’re not going to get this contract if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do on the pitch first,” Gallup said. “I think, one thing to think about, you can’t say anything in the future. You just gotta do what you’re supposed to do now. So for me it’s just about helping this club win ball games, having fun doing it. Obviously, I would love to stay here, I would love to be in Dallas, love the community, love this city, love the fans, so it’s in the air, but I want to be here. So we’ll see. “
Gallup is only 25 and has a lot of good football ahead of him. It’ll be interesting to see if the Cowboys appreciate him enough to keep him in the organization if he has a big year in 2021. The cost won’t be cheap, but keeping a line like Cooper, Lamb and Gallup together in one. foreseeable future could be worth the price.
