An aggressive coyote was shot after apparently attacking a mother and her 4-year-old son in a New Jersey park, authorities said.
The 34-year-old woman was pushing her child in a stroller at the Fairfield Recreation Complex at around 7pm. Thursday, when she was alerted that a coyote was following her, said Fairfield police.
When the woman returned to see where the animal was, the coyote was thrown at her, pushing her to the ground and tipping the stroller, officials said.

The coyote then bit the woman in the back of the leg, before biting the child's right leg, police said.
"At that time, other people started running towards the victim, which allowed them to stand up and straighten the stroller," police said in a press release. "She tried to run away at that time, the coyote was thrown back on her again."

Authorities said the coyote had fled to a nearby wooded area, while the mother and child had been transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The recreation complex was closed while police and members of the New Jersey Conservation Department, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Associated Humane searched for the coyote.

The police said Sgt. Frank Tracey spotted the dog an hour and a half later, walking in a garden on a nearby road.

Although coyotes are often seen in northern New Jersey, the attacks are "extremely rare," according to NorthJersey.com.
Authorities across the country, however, warn pet owners of possible coyote attacks. In San Diego, an animal shelter issued a warning Thursday after three pet owners reported deadly attacks of coyotes.
