Uvalde Coyotes kicker Miller Carnes scores the extra point during Friday night’s Uvalde-La Vernia soccer game in the Honey Bowl.

It was a rough start in the District 14-4A Division I football game for the Uvalde Coyotes on Friday night.

The Coyotes lost a 56-14 decision to the La Vernia Bears in the Honey Bowl.

Although they lost the game, the Coyotes scored early in the competition.

Following a nine-yard punt from the Bears, the Coyotes started their first offensive possession at La Vernia’s 49-yard line.

An offside penalty gave the Coyotes a first and five points at LV 44.

Running back Julyus Martinez carried the ball for a nine-yard gain.

In the next play, quarterback Brodie Carnes connected with wide receiver Joey Martinez for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Miller Carnes pulled the extra run and the Coyotes took a 7-0 lead with 9:33 left in the first period.

In their first offensive possession of the second half, the Coyotes hit a 10-game, 70-yard touchdown.

Eli Barboza completed training with a one-yard quarterback.

Wide receiver Martyn Malic emphasized the drive as he caught three assists.

Malic caught an 11-yard pass from Brodie Carnes, while he caught 24- and 32-yard passes from quarterback Jayden Gonzalez.

Malic’s last two catches came on consecutive passes from Gonzalez to set up Barboza’s touchdown run.

Miller Carnes scored the extra point.

The Coyotes, now 0-1 in the district and 2-5 for the season, will be on the road next Thursday night to face reigning district champions Boerne Greyhounds.

In action at Pleasanton on Friday night, the Greyhounds rallied to post a 39-31 victory over the Pleasanton Eagles.
