CPS Energy holds update on power outages at 2:30 p.m.

SAINT ANTHONY – CPS Energy will hold a virtual press conference at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to take stock of efforts to restore power to the hundreds of thousands of residents who have been without power for long hours amid this winter storm.

About two-thirds of CPS Energy grids continue to experience spinning outages, but with unprecedented demand for electricity, residents reported the outages lasted for several hours or more. The other third of the network remains supplied because these circuits supply essential services, such as a hospital, a base or a police department.

Paula Gold-Williams, president and CEO of CPS Energy, said Monday that the bulk of outages residents experience are due to rotations. Without the power outages, entire grids would be taken offline, leaving them without power indefinitely, Gold-Williams said.

Due to the demand – which exceeded the demand seen during the summer months – CPS officials are asking people to save energy when possible.

The dangerous cold air mass in San Antonio will keep temperatures below freezing for most of Tuesday. A partial merge will take place, only to see everything refreeze on Wednesday Morning.

Freezing drizzle and freezing rain are expected after sunset on Tuesday.

Some San Antonio residents without electricity told KSAT they resorted to their luggage or heading to their vehicles for a brief relief from their cold homes.

As of 11 a.m., around 320,000 customers in Bexar County are affected by power outages.
