NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (WTNH) – Crew members were on hand when a fire broke out in a New Haven mosque late Sunday afternoon.
According to New Haven Fire Department officials, the flames erupted at Diyanet Mosque, 531 Middletown Avenue.
Firefighters said that a person was inside when flames burst near the entrance – spreading up to the second floor.
As this is a place of worship and the current cultural climate, the New Haven Fire Chief announced that the Connecticut State Police would be called to investigate whether something was suspicious or not.
This is the custom considering the recent number of attacks on places of worship across the country.
The faithful said they were heartbroken. It took five to six years to raise the funds for the construction of this mosque, and construction was not complete.
We do not know what caused the fire.
