Rescue teams who searched the rubble of a Massachusetts condominium that mysteriously caught fire on Sunday night found a human body, two explosives and several propane tanks, according to reports reached Monday.

The teams stopped tearing down the Fitchburg building, about 90 km west of Boston, after discovering a corpse on the third floor under part of the collapsed roof, reported Boston's WFXT newspaper.

The discovery was confirmed by Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early at a press conference held on Monday.

"The cause and origin of the fire have not yet been determined, although we have found two improvised explosives, also known as IEDs, in the apartment," said Early. "It appeared that whoever assembled them knew what he was doing."

The remains have been assigned to a Chief Forensic Pathologist, who will perform an autopsy, reported WFXT. The identity of the victim and the causes of the fire are unclear.

The first authorities investigated reports that a resident of the apartment was at risk of being deported.

"We phoned his old workplace to warn them, out of caution," he said.

The neighbors quoted by WFXT said they heard an explosion before the condo ignited around 18 hours.

At least 60 people were displaced while crews were working all night fighting the flames, Republican reported. Floods of smoke, for their part, could be seen several kilometers away.
