England will face Australia in the World Cup semi-finals on Thursday, after Aaron Finch's teams have been outscored by South Africa in a thriller at Old Trafford.

Australia lost 10 points in the last group match of the competition and will head to Edgbaston to face England, while India, the group's winner, will face New Zealand at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"It's going to be a blockbuster," said Australian captain Finch. "It does not get much bigger than England against Australia in the semifinals of the World Cup.

"The fans are always entertaining (Edgbaston), it will create a fantastic atmosphere."

Australia, beating 326 to win the win, sank to 95-3 and lost Usman Khawaja because of a hamstring problem, but David Warner's influential century gave the defending champions the hope of a victory.

Box office goaltender Alex Carey opened the scoring in the last 10 overruns, scoring a fine of 85, but, with 51 needed out of 28 balls, he failed, and Australia did not regain his momentum.

The total of South Africa had been established by a ton of Captain Faf du Plessis and 95 of Rassie van der Dussen.

Australia, meanwhile, will travel to Birmingham with concerns over the injuries of three key players.

Khawaja returned after his departure at the start of Australia's innings, but he could barely run, Marcus Stoinis was being cared for while he was hitting and Mitchell Starc seemed to feel some discomfort during the bowling.

Australia, who also face England in the World Cup Ash Series, watched the bad weather on the field – which England will not go unnoticed.

"If England is to take a snapshot of today, it would be in the end – the Australian drummers consoling themselves, the team as a whole looks down on them with the hands in the pockets, "said BBC Cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew.

"They must lift themselves now."

Australia found itself on the field at the end of the match

Have you watched, England?

Australia dominated the group ahead of Saturday's game, but that loss means they will now have to face England at Edgbaston, where they have not won any matches in any format since 2001.

The English team of Eoin Morgan saw her first order blown by Australia in the group stage, but she will have watched today with interest.

South Africa started quickly with its aggressive play in the early stages. Taking advantage of a discolored Starc, they forced Captain Finch to make the first changes. For the first time, Australia did not know where the breakthrough came from.

Australia used eight different bowlers in the first 20 openings. If England, which has such a destructive order, can do the same and play with cautious aggression, it can put Australia on the back.

Warner, however, was superb.

South Africa should have pulled him out of the third innings, but Kagiso Rabada shot on the wrong side and from there, Warner barely looked back.

Warner is not as aggressive as before his ban for his involvement in "Sandpapergate". but the power is still there. England can not afford to feed its forces.

There are however opportunities for England. Carey has been a notable player for Australia, but he is the strong link of a fragile middle order and Australia 's sleeves have calmed down once he has fallen.

Australia is also concerned about the injuries: Khawaja could not run and had to retire badly, Stoinis had three separate physio treatments on his side and Starc touched his leg carefully while he was at the bowling alley.

South Africa finishes in style

Quinton de Kock places the ball on the stumps and sees Stoinis fired for 22

The Proteas had a mediocre tournament, but they continued their winning streak against Australia. They beat them in eight of their last nine international matches.

With the opening of the match, Hashim Amla, injured, Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock beat the ball, and Du Plessis managed to hit the first century with a South African at this tournament.

Van der Dussen has manipulated the pitch and Australia's formidable attack and, although he has blocked the last ball for the six that would have brought him to a century, he has good prospects for the future.

De Kock was superb behind the stumps, affecting a bold exit from Stoinis by placing the ball on the stumps, and he was successful in dismissing the dangerous Glenn Maxwell.

While their death game is a source of concern – Chris Morris was whipped for 17 points by Starc and Khawaja on day 48 – they finally kept the courage to secure a consolation victory.

"India will be happy to have won today," they said.

Australian captain Aaron Finch: "We would have liked to win, there were some positives with the bat.

"We fought out of a hole Davey Warner with a magnificent hundred and Alex Carey threw a brilliant shot to get us closer but it was not good enough."

Finch on injuries concerns: "It does not seem ideal for Usman Khawaja, he will have a scanner in the morning, Marcus Stoinis, we are not sure for the moment."

South African captain Faf du Plessis: "I think India will be happy that we won today .I think it will be an England-India final." India and Australia are playing great matches very well, then I would support one of these two teams on the biggest stage of all. "
