“It nailed him in the slimy woolly woolens”
Maybe cricket batsmen need to start wearing cups.
Alex Hales and the Trent Rockets faced the Oval Invincibles on Sunday in a new English cricket competition called The Hundred. The difference between The Hundred and other forms of cricket isn’t worth discussing here, as you don’t need to know the rules to understand what happened to Hales.
Hales was battling against Reece Topley when he was shot in the crotch not once but twice. On consecutive balls.
The first nut hit came after Hales tipped over and missed a delivery that bounced and pierced him, causing him to let out an “Oh no!”
“It nailed him in the slimy woolly woolens,” the announcer said.
You’d think Hales would be more protective of his lower regions after the first incident, but no. On the next ball Hales got hit again in the slimy woolly woolens, at which point everyone on the pitch but Hales was chuckling softly.
I know next to nothing about cricket, but I do know that Hales isn’t even the only English batsman to be hit in the nuts twice in the same inning.
In January 2020, during an Australian Big Bash League match, Liam Livingstone was hit twice in the crotch in the space of a few balls. The Livingstone music video is one of my favorite videos on the internet because he carried a microphone which meant we heard him scream “Oh nooo! (Just like Hales did) loud and clear.
Due to the way the pitcher bounces the ball and the way the batter opens his hips when swinging, getting a crotch hit doesn’t seem to be that uncommon in cricket. Just ask England star Ben Stokes, who, after being hit where the sun doesn’t shine in 2019 during the prestigious Ashes test series, shouted: “Ahhh, in the d —!” as he collapsed on the grass.
