The comment immediately sparked backlash … as many perceived it to be sexist – Collinsworth hinting he was surprised women had complex football issues.
Collinsworth clearly saw the critics, as soon after the game was over … he offered a lengthy apology.
“Today on our show I referred to a few women I met in Pittsburgh who impressed me so much with their football knowledge that I wanted to tell their story live,” Cris said. “I know the way I worded it insulted a lot. I’m so sorry.”
“What I wanted to do as a compliment to the Pittsburgh fans has become an insult. I’m tired of insulting any fan, but especially female fans and journalists.”
Cris added: “I know firsthand how much more they have to work than any of us in this industry. I was wrong and I deeply apologize.”
The 61-year-old – who played wide receiver in the NFL in the 1980s – has advertised and analyzed NFL games for several networks for decades.
