In precious stones, Danny McBride (one of the HBO most reliable comic actors), is again. This time, the man who donned the mullet of the minor league athlete Kenny Powers and the vice-director Neal Gamby's sweater vest tackles an even riper industry for satire: the mega-churches at profit from America.
McBride is not alone, however, since John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, Roseanne) and Adam DeVine (Workaholics, Pitch Perfect) join him to bless this industry with a hilarious mockery. And after watching the premiere of The Righteous Gemstones premiere, I can confidently say that this show is definitely a reason to keep your subscription to HBO.
When does The Righteous Gemstones make its first appearance on HBO?
The antics of the Gemstone family begin this Sunday, August 18 at 22h. East and Pacific. His first episode lasts an hour, but the following episodes last 30 minutes.

The first stone of precious stones
Before coming to my thoughts on this episode, I will say what is obvious: beyond that, they are revealing. I do my best not to tell the whole story and I keep some important points for your pleasure.
As in most of Danny McBride's shows, The Righteous Gemstones find laughter in the dark recesses of misdeeds done by minds misguided with too much power. This is an equation that has been proven since its breakthrough in The Foot Fist Way and will continue well after the end of Gemstones.
McBride plays the role of Jesse Gemstone, son of Eli Gemstone (Goodman), a patriarch of a family of televangelists whose work is a combination of charity and greed. Goodman's initial performance is a bit limited, but I think his character will have a simmering rage that builds throughout the series.

Although Eli's wife is no longer on the fatal heel (the cause of death is notably unknown), Jesse is surrounded by his family, led by Amber (Cassidy Freeman), his loving wife – but especially naive – and his sons Pontius and Abraham. Oh, and he also has a third child, Gideon, whose absence is a burden for which Jesse is always sensitive.
Eli might favor Jesse, but his other children, Kelvin (DeVine) and Judy (Edi Patterson) despise Jesse. While Kelvin's anger is rooted in the desire to know who the best minister is, Judy's frustration stems from the rampant sexism of the Gemstone family. In one of the most memorable moments of the first, we see a shocking amount of submission that made me laugh how depressing it became.
The links between these relationships are rapidly closing as Jesse's past catches up with him. His problem is simple: thugs threaten to publish a shabby video that expose his antics less than family. Although the clip itself is only slightly humorous, I found myself laughing until it hurt me through the repetition and reactions of other characters.

Soon, everything is pear-shaped. Everyone is screaming at each other. No one is happy, with the exception of the public, who is probably shaking at buffoonery.
The first episode of The Righteous Gemstones, lasting one hour, gives him time to build the world appropriately and tease future characters. Walton Goggins and Dermot Mulroney both appear to be serious stage goers for the entire season, which, according to IMDb, will be a series of 8 episodes.
