The just launched PlayStation 5 video game console is sold out everywhere and is only available from retailers at inflated prices, but scams abound as well.

The PlayStation 5 continues to sell out in seconds in the US and UK as retailers ditch new inventory, some bought by robots who bought them faster than any human. The pent-up demand may have been responsible for the repeated collapse of Walmart’s website in November, Ben Gilbert reported. A group of resellers told Business Insider they bought 3,500 consoles, and the resellers said they were selling $ 500 PlayStations for up to $ 1,100. Consoles are such a popular product that they were the hottest element of Black Friday, although they weren’t discounted at all.

Now some crooks are taking advantage of the rush to get a PlayStation 5, with deceptive listings for pictures of consoles, some of which already have prices in the hundreds of dollars. The website has now issued a warning to sellers trying to take advantage of the system’s scarcity, EuroGamer reported.

eBay

“We condemn these opportunistic sellers who try to deceive other users,” eBay said in a statement to EuroGamer. “We are in the process of removing all PS5 photo ads from our marketplace and will take appropriate action against the sellers.”

The company also cautioned buyers to read descriptions of expensive items carefully and victims should refer to eBay’s money-back guarantee for listings not as described.

In the November 28 post, EuroGamer said that a search for “Playstation 5 photo” returned 324 results. On November 30, a Business Insider search returned 114 results, indicating that eBay may have taken action against some scammers.
