A cruise line passenger has died of the coronavirus in Belize after a COVID-19 outbreak on a Carnival Cruise Line ship.
The person boarded the Carnival Vista cruise ship in Texas on July 31 and the ship headed for Belize, where the person received medical treatment.
“We are truly sorry to learn of the passing of a guest who has sailed Carnival Vista, ”the company said in a statement.
“The guest almost certainly did not contract COVID on our ship, and she was assisted by expert medical attention on board and was eventually evacuated from Belize after we provided a resource for her family,” the company added.
The New York Times reported the victim was a 77-year-old woman from Oklahoma and she died on August 14.
Belize Tourism Board issued a statement assuring its citizens that strict protocols have been followed with the victim and that no COVID-19 positive passengers are allowed into the country without special permission.
“A recent passenger aboard a Carnival ship presented with health concerns due to COVID-19. Based on these protocols, the passenger was cleared to disembark to receive the urgent care required and was then medically evacuated by air ambulance, ”the board said.
This is the first time that a COVID-19 positive individual has been granted an emergency request to enter the country since cruises resumed.
There were 27 people on board the ship who tested positive for the virus, including 26 crew members and the only passenger who died. All individuals were vaccinated, The Belize Tourist Board said.
There was a total of 2,895 guests and 1,441 crew on board.
