Cruise ship catches fire off the Greek coast of Corfu (Kerkyra)

A large fire broke out on an MSC cruise ship moored in Corfu (Kerkyra) Greece Friday.

The fire started on an MSC Lirica fiberglass lifeboat before 3:42 p.m. local time and sent large plumes of smoke into the sky, according to MSC Cruises.

The ship is moored at the port of Corfu for the winter with 51 crew on board but no passengers.

There were no injuries, according to the cruise line.

It took about three hours for the firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

Efforts to put out the blaze were declared over at 6:58 p.m. local time, according to the cruise line.

A preliminary assessment showed damage to the side of the ship but not to the interior, the MSC spokesperson said.

The 902-foot-long, 65,591-ton vessel has 992 cabins with a capacity of 2,548 passengers and 752 staff, according to MSC Cruises.

Onboard amenities include a spa, theater, casino and nightclub.
