Crypto and God: Mississippi Church Offers Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Others as Donation Option

Back Bay Church in St. Martin, Mississippi last Sunday became the first known Southern Baptist church to offer cryptocurrency as a method of donation, according to Baptist press.

Pastor Adam Bennet, from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, who has been in full-time ministry since 2005, introduced crypto as a donation option, alongside more traditional channels.

“It’s not normal [in churches] today, but may be in the future as more and more people become interested in cryptocurrency, ”according to Bennett, a self-proclaimed techie, who besides Bitcoin (BTC), decided to include Ethereum (ETH), as well as Bitcoin Cash (BCH), stablecoin IAD, Dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (SLD) and USD coin (USDC) as a donation option.

“One of the reasons Back Bay did this is because I’m an early adopter and I love being on the cutting edge of technology. But we also have other people who are invested in crypto. We want to take some of our assets that we have invested, see them rise in value and give them to the work of the church, ”Bennett explained, while reiterating that his church is dipping its toe into crypto is just that. at this stage.

Bennett pointed out that these nonprofits use cryptography to effectively secure funding for projects such as the construction of wells.

“For missionary work, we have people who are in some of these areas,” he said.

“We can get them money quickly, in minutes or even seconds, for as little as maybe hundredths of a cent. They would then be transferred to the currency they needed to transact in the field, ”Bennett concluded.
