"The most affected areas are Cortés and Yoro, who are in epidemic because of the high number of dengue cases," said the head of the monitoring unit of the Ministry of Health, Edith Rodríguez.

The epidemiologist reported that 1,967 people were infected with dengue fever throughout the country and that nearly 50% of the patients were in the department of Cortés.

"This represents an increase of 96% over the previous year, and the most affected department is Cortés, where 665 dengue cases were recorded," he said.

These are the data that have been reported up to epidemiological week number six; 665 cases were recorded in the north of the country, a situation that worries the authorities.

"Until last week we had 1,967 cases nationwide, but the largest concentration of cases in Cortes, Yoro and San Pedro Sula, are the most affected," Rodriguez said.

CORTÉS, WITH MORE CASES
Until now, the authorities have not decreed urgently in the department of Cortés, as they have badured that they would always be able to meet the needs of the population.

Cortes reported 46.6% of cases nationwide, including 278 people in the metropolitan area of San Pedro Sula.

To date, 1,967 dengue cases have been reported in the country and 46% of them are concentrated in the north of the country.

Of this total, at least 517 people have been infected with severe dengue, according to reports.

Rodriguez said that "in San Pedro Sula, there has been an alert and that health staff and mayors are working primarily to provide preventive measures and control of mosquito breeding sites".

The Ministry of Health is investigating the deaths of eight people who are believed to have died because of dengue fever.

Four of these deaths correspond to the year 2018 and the others belong to this year. Research is still going on to find out if they are really dead from this disease.

LOCAL EMERGENCIES
Despite the high percentage of cases with an increase in the number of cases compared to the previous year, the authorities say "this does not mean that we can declare an emergency at the moment".

Emergency health committees and mayors of affected municipalities are those who can declare the emergency locally.

"We are investigating eight suspected dengue deaths, the technical table will meet later this month to certify them through investigations and certifications of people," Rodriguez said. (DS)
