HAVANA TIMES – The Central American Jesuit University (UCA) of Nicaragua, one of the university centers where protests against the government began last April, announced today its indefinite closure before the cut of an economic grant that she received from the Government, informed the institution.
In an official notice, the UCA management revealed that it has suspended its academic programs and payment to 1,370 workers in the month of August for lack of resources. It is the first university to announce its indefinite closure since the beginning of the crisis in the country.
The state grants 6% of the republic's budget to public universities and some private universities, such as UCA, as approved law.
According to the UCA press release, the government argued that the illiquidity was not used to disburse the funds that the university used for scholarships and the improvement of infrastructure and services.
