The number of Internet connections reached 30.4 million in the first quarter of 2018, according to the ICT Quarterly Bulletin corresponding to the period between January and March of this year. On this figure 16.5 million correspond to the modality of subscription and 13.9 million correspond to the modality of demand. While in the first few months of the year, there were 23.9 million mobile connections in total, which means that eight out of ten Internet connections in the country are of this type.
Regarding fixed Internet connections, the Ministry of ICT reported that strata 4, 1 and 2 recorded the highest growth during this period compared to the first quarter of 2017 . with variations of 10.6%; 8.6% and 7.4% respectively.
Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Juan Sebastián Rozo, said that this growth is due in part to various initiatives such as the delivery of grants to more than two millions of households.
" We managed to move from 730,000 fixed internet connections in strata 1 and 2 in 2010 to 2.9 million this year, that means that not only is the reduction of the digital divide important but the technology and the opportunities it offers help to bridge the social gap, "he said.
Bogotá, Antioquia and Risaralda are the regions where the penetration rate is the highest high of fixed Internet access.
With regard to telephony, the report reveals that 3.7 million lines were recorded more than the same period of 2017, while they exceeded 62.8 million, of which 80% are in the prepaid category and 20% are postpaid
