The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) forecasts a decline in soybean, rice, cereal and sugar in Latin America and an increase in milk and beef production.
According to the report on food outlook released by the agency in the last hours, Brazil will replace the United States as the world's third largest supplier of soybean oil and will remain the largest supplier of meat poultry and flour.
In South America, the expansion of plantations in Argentina increased its production forecast to 20 million tonnes, 8% more than the previous year, while Mexico, the main producer of Central America, recorded low wheat plantings that significantly reduced their production forecasts.
Wheat imports into Latin America and the Caribbean are expected this year and next year to approach 25 million tonnes, an increase of about one million tonnes, mainly due to Increased purchases from Brazil and Mexico, the most important demand for this cereal in the region.
In Argentina and Brazil, maize harvests are expected to decrease by around 15% from the 2017 record.
In the case of rice, the annual reduction of 1.5% of total production is expected to fall by 18.6 million tonnes.
Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela will reap less rice than in 2017, which will not be offset by the planned increases Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru.
Total purchases from Latin America and the Caribbean could decrease by 5% to 4.2 million tonnes, due to reductions in Brazil, Haiti, Mexico and Peru, due to Local availability and higher international prices.
