Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, known around the world as Quino, the "father" of Mafalda, celebrates his 86th birthday today that her rebellious little heroine has more reasons than it is enough to worry about the direction of the planet.

Born in a family of Spanish emigrants, on July 17, 1932, Quino studied Fine Arts but quickly chose the caricature.

He begins to publish the Mafalda gang in 1964 in the weekly Primera Plana without imagining that this ironic, inquisitive and worried girl for world peace would become an icon of caricature and that his adventures would be translated into 30 languages

Tired of the small Mafalda, Quino stopped making the band in 1973, but he recovered the character to illustrate the campaigns for the rights of the child.

In 2009, he announced that he was stopping drawing to avoid repeating himself.

During his long career, Quino has published several books and received many honors, such as the Golden Romics, the greatest prize awarded by the Comic Strip and Animation Festival of Rome, in its 2011 edition, and the Ibero II American Graphic Humor Award Quevedos.
