Javier Sotomayor's World Record at 25

Today marks the 25th World Record by Javier Sotomayor

Havana, July 27th. (RHC) This July 27 marks the 25th anniversary of a memorable mark for Cuban athletics and, in general, for sport in the Greater West Indies. One day like today, in 1993, Javier Sotomayor Sanabria set a world record in high jump, crossing the bar on 2 meters and 45 centimeters.

The event was held in the Spanish city of Salamanca, and a quarter of a century later, Sotomayor is the only Cuban who holds the world record for athletics.

The idol of Limonar, in the province of Matanzas, reached the record when he was 25 years old. As Sotomayor confessed, in Spain he achieved important results. He was Olympic champion in Barcelona in 1992; has imposed a universal brand in Salamanca, in a stadium that now bears its name. And as if that was not enough, he received the Prince of Asturias Award, which, in a play on words, seems to be the Prince of the Heights.

When a good chunk of Cubans closely follows what is happening in Barranquilla, the tribute can not be missed at one of the greatest athletes of all time in Cuba. A man who continues to offer his knowledge to younger generations of athletes, who continues to promote Cuban sport and whose record places the name of this archipelago well in place. So high, that he had the dimension of his attempt at the doors of the International Olympic Committee
