Speech by Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of State Councils and Ministers, on the occasion of the closing of the 10th Congress of the Union of Cuban Journalists, at the Palais des congrès , July 14, 2018 "Year 60 of the Revolution."
Well, to start fulfilling congressional mandates and support Ronquillo and the new leadership, before December I'm on Twitter (Applause and exclamations).
State and Government Party Companions present here
Dear National Journalism Awards
Dear Journalists:
After our most recent tours of several provinces and the days of this Congress, both scenarios allow me to share experiences and meditations with the national press more closely, I understood better why Fidel once asked them to consider him as one of you.
Cuban journalists have the undeniable merit of having supported the voice of the nation under the most difficult circumstances and times, with admirable loyalty, a keen sense of responsibility, talent, skill, and talent. intelligence and a contagious enthusiasm that always generates interesting proposals. We did not expect and we expected no less than those who are proud to belong to an ennobled guild of its origins by intellectuals the size of José Martí, Fidel Castro and the the most brilliant leaders of the Revolution, from 1868 to the present day. Today, after long and wearisome years under the simultaneous siege of the most serious material deficiencies and unacceptable misunderstandings of some of our sources, it is legitimate to recognize that most of you have had to struggle very hard. to properly carry out a trade that requires not only talent and effort, but also very high ideals to reject, amid great economic sacrifices, relatively "generous" payment offers that the profitable industry of campaigns against Cuba, opportunistic and cynical, puts at the disposal of those who price or naively believe in the false libertarian speech of market apologists.
We could say that the media landscape has never been so stimulating and challenging, but we would be unfair to the story of a revolution that has not known a truce in its history. a determined effort to conquer all justice and from day one, Fidel, who presided over the Congress, understood the central role of journalism in defending the besieged fortress.
How to imagine without the numerous underground and guerrilla press or without Radio Rebelde the fast advance of the rebel army? What would have happened to the nascent revolution without the brilliant "Operation Truth"? The media war that stole the name of the apostle, aired by a plane, has not been submerged with technologies and new journalistic projects that have revolutionized radio and television in the past. Time and still today?
the truth needs journalism, Cuba could build a public media system whose main strength is you, journalists, more effective while being more authentic, original and creative to tell the nation and the world the truth that " needs them. "
What we can say now is that although the ICT revolution, the Internet era and the tyranny of companies engaged in the communications sector present us with increasingly important challenges in our underdeveloped economy, the country has not been subject to the rules of his opponent and has not surrendered his sovereignty in the name of rapid modernity.
And no matter how much rain tries to take us back to the past of sensationalism and the private press under new masks, neither the Cuban public media nor its journalists are for sale.
I do not accuse unfairly. I emphasize the open warfare that is waged against us by the fact that, under the umbrella of better moments in ever-fragile relations with the powerful neighbor who despises us, we have escalated into the attack of what unites us – the Party – and he defends us, our press, continually disqualifying the two and trying to fracture and separate what comes from the same root and grows in the same trunk.
Referring to the type of mission that these media are trying to achieve with a surprising articulation that contradicts his so-called freedom, Mr. Lagarde shot with irony, but without euphemisms, the new clbad of leaders who sells us, from these spaces . I recommend the complete reading of the "new revolutionaries" from those that Lagarde states: […] The new revolutionaries swear and perjury that they are not employees of official thought, but that they accept scholarships in the United States universities or that they receive journalism courses in Holland. where they are sure to teach them how to defend socialism in Cuba. We must badume that these courses and scholarships are free.
"The new revolutionaries call for disobedience when the union is most needed. For them, also experts in politics, nothing has to do with Cuba the" judicial "persecution of leftist leaders in Latin America, Attempts of State Strikes and Invasions in Venezuela and Nicaragua
"The new revolutionaries are democratic and respectful of contrary opinions, that is why those who do not share their positions are: submissive, lambs, obedient, mediocre, Taliban, Khmer Rouge, Stalinist, pro-government and repressive. "
" The main mission of the new revolutionaries is therefore to divide something that, without a doubt, they get sometimes. "
Lagarde's text is just a little longer, but these ideas are sufficient, because they define the most urgent challenge of that time in this part of the world.
I know that the documents Theoretical and congressional debates, without ignoring, forgetting or rejecting internal emergencies, which are ultimately strategic, have shown the centrality of this battle that will never cease, between the logic of capital, selfish and excluding and our logic socialist and Martian, faithful, supportive and generous.
Because, although they sell us another version of the facts, the stubborn reality is too much in sight, causing pain to those who believed that the wolf was a sheep.
This is or is not, since the time of Shakespeare.
Of course, this Congress has been much more than this central debate and we are happy. First of all, we have reached this tenth edition with Social Communication Policy, a document that defines, finally, as a citizen's right and as a public good, access to information, communication and knowledge; this gives the highest authority to the press; who cuts the company and establishes obligations in this direction for the institutions, the organizations, the authorities; who defends the values and symbols of the nation and commands respect for the diversity that we are. It declares communication as a strategic resource of state and government management and defines the public character of broadcasting and communication services and recognizes only two types of media ownership: l & # 39; State and social media.
The UPEC and the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana actively participated in the development of the policy and its adaptation and adaptation to the present time. Virtually the entire guild participated in fundamental discussions for its subsequent application. There is enthusiasm in the Congress for the open doors to the historical and recent concerns of the sector, such as management systems that grant greater autonomy to the media and their reinforcement, order, technological renovation. I understand that those who are not invited to the badysis are enraged because they are not part of the UPEC, nor of Cuban society who won with sacrifices and efforts the right exclusive to discuss the design of the future.
And, of course, we are not surprised that they started throwing waves of intrigue against the Party and the media system of the country, the only thinking employees of the world in its Creole version or foreign. Qu & # 39; they expect? What do you suggest? Do we give, for example, our press agencies to the arms of the market and their journalists to the street? Well no. Our Telam will not be bled. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) does not send to Cuba.
For the news that I have received since the early days of Congress, this has been a successful event, with the economics of solid, contributory reports and approaches, grbadroots experience of organization in the media and in the academy. I think it's because the UPEC has not stopped working during these years, even in the most disconcerting and hardest moments, when they lost their natural and formal leader, Brother Moltó, as I know that they like to call it, for the sake of it. of camaraderie that he left as a style of work and his special relationship with the base at all levels.
His brilliant definition of what is UPEC, his battle to add young people to any fight Cuba has had and its ability to promote even the pulse to computerization, the use of social networks and the intensive use of the contributions of the Faculty, they leave a marked route by which from today a renewed national committee will pbad without breaking the continuity.
Commission summaries will be a useful working tool to address new media spaces, without fear, creatively at the offensive, overcoming the technological advantages of colonizing platforms with the talent and creativity that we have brought our nature and our cultural heritage and the politics that Fidel left us, that Raúl and his companions of the historical generation continue to give us.
I do not forget the strongest demands you made us: the salary, insufficient and anchored in old resolutions to discard; the precarious material situation of the media and journalists, a subject in which light is already beginning to appear at the end of the tunnel of our eternal shortages, at least in the provinces, where the needs of journalists and their media have been taken into account in Employment of 1% of the territorial contribution (local income).
No one is better prepared than you to understand that what is waiting is much more than the need for a guild. It is the need of a people, noble and hardworking, whose human, heroic and moving stories are yet to be fully told. As it is more like the country we are, the country that our media show. Material resources may be lacking, but the moral resource and the revolutionary ethics, to which you contribute daily, can never be missed, which Víctor Joaquín y Aroldo defends.
To defend these values, we are Cuba!
As I asked you to consider me again, I also feel a great responsibility in the great task ahead of you, for you and for us, the Party, the State and the Government. settle our many debts with past and recent history, which is at the same time with the future.
Yes, the truth needs you. And the Revolution, Martí and Fidel we have learned, is this truth greater than us?
We will see ourselves on the path of this horizon that we must.
Thank you very much (Ovation).
