The internet in Mexico is slower than in Cuba: study

Do you take a lot of time to download music, pictures, or movies to your Internet-connected devices? If your answer is yes, it's because Mexico's broadband download speed does not reach the world average ; the Internet in the country, even, is slower than in Cuba, which has allowed broadband in 20% of public places of the island in the last two years.

According to the study "Worldwide broadband speed league 2018" -made by the Open Technology Institute of New America, Google Open Source Research, the PlanetLab of the University of Princeton, Cable, among others-, broadband in Mexico has a download capacity of 5.69 Mbps, which makes it possible to download a 5GB HD movie in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 58 seconds .

On the other hand, the Internet download capacity in Cuba is 5.83 Mbps which makes it possible to download a film in HD of 5 gigabytes in 1 hour, 57 minutes and 8 seconds.

The findings of the study detail that while the average download speed in the world drops from 7.40 Mbps in May 2017 to 9.10 Mbps in May 2018 – an increase of 23 percent, in Mexico decreased from 7.59 Mbps in May 2017 to 5.69 Mbps this year .

The country with the fastest Internet in the world for the second year in a row is Singapore . The Asian broadband speed can download a 5 GB HD movie in just 11 minutes and 18 seconds.

Other countries of the Americas that, in addition to Cuba, have Internet faster than Mexico are Martinique, Curacao, San Cristóbal and Nieves, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Panama, Jamaica, Bahamas, among others.

The study, conducted since 2017, takes into account 200 countries around the world where they took thousands of speed tests to build the database.
