The longest lunar eclipse of the century

This July 27, the planet will live the longest lunar eclipse of the current century, with a duration of three hours and 55 minutes. The blood moon and the lunar eclipse will be more durable than any other event of this type until 2100 .

The moon was very close to reaching this peak of eclipse on July 16, 2000, when the phenomenon lasted hour and 46.4 minutes. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are directly aligned, and the orbit of the Moon takes it into the shadow of the Earth.

During the eclipse, the moon pbades through the shadow projected by the Earth. Earth (what we call umbra), and will acquire an intense red or orange color instead of disappearing completely from sight, hence the nickname of blood moon.
