Egyptian archaeologists revealed Saturday the details of an ancient cemetery and a mummification workshop discovered 30 meters underground, near Saqqara, south of Cairo

Archaeologists expect the mummification workshop to offer new information on the chemistry of the oils used by ancient Egyptians to mummify their deaths.

It is believed that the funerary well, dating back more than 2000 years, corresponds to the Sata-Persian period, about 664-404 before the Christian era. The place was discovered in April this year and contains 35 mummies as well as stone sarcophagi.

"This discovery will add two very important things: the first is the type of used oils (in mummification) and their chemical composition. So we can identify the precise types of used oils, "said Ramadan Badry Hussein, head of the Egyptian-German mission who discovered the site.

Hundreds of small stone statues, jars and cups used in the process of mummification were found

The most important artifact was a golden silver mask, the second discovery of this kind, said the Minister of Antiquities, Khaled al-Anany.

Archaeologists have so far searched several relics that include a 4,400-year-old grave on the Giza Plateau and an ancient necropolis in Menia, south of Cairo.
