CHICAGO – At this place, with this pitcher, in this situation, it seemed as close to a lock as it could be.
Kyle Hendricks, who played a full 81-shot game against the Cardinals in May, was back on the mound to face Wrigley Field on Sunday night. The Cubs have won the first five games of the season at home against St. Louis, including two this weekend at Friendly Confines.
This seems to be the perfect scenario for a win, and it worked exactly that way.
Hendricks was once again strong on the mound, yielding only one point in seven innings, while the mighty Kyle Schwarber scored two more goals in a 5-1 win.
In the process, the Cubs continue a very promising trend with respect to their division rivals.
So far this season, the team has played six games against St. Louis in Chicago and has managed to win them all. The Cubs swept the Cardinals impressively in May with a full Hendricks gaming crown on May 3, a comeback in four sets the next day, helped by a grand slam receiver Taylor Davis with a counterpart from Javier Baez.
This Sunday night, the Cubs scored 13 points and Kris Bryant had a grand slam in an eight-point win.
Not even a sweep of the hands of the Cardinals in St. Louis last weekend could stop their home swing against their rivals of division – and things went the same way. Cole Hamels kicked off the series with an excellent performance on the pitch Friday with a 3-1 win against the Cubs, and the team once again ran four points to win Saturday with nine unanswered points.
Sunday was another decisive victory with Hendricks and Schwarber leading the triumph of the four points that brought out the brooms for the second time this year against St. Louis at home.
If you go back to last season, the Cubs have in fact recorded a series of seven straight wins against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, having beaten them in the final of the regular season last September. In 2018, the Cubs were 5-4 against St. Louis at Wrigley Field.
Neither team will be seen often until the last weeks of the season, with each team separating for the next three months. The Cardinals make their last trip to Wrigley Field in 2019 on Sept. 19 for a four-game series that ends in the regular season at Friendly Confines. One week later, the teams will finish the regular season with a set of three games at the Busch stadium.
Many things are going to happen here, but for the moment, all the Cardinals are seeing Wrigley Field a collection of brooms this season.
