The Chicago Cubs called on Carlos Gonzalez on Monday and plugged him into training, hoping the veteran could reverse the offensive.
Gonzalez, 33, was signed Thursday in a contract with the minor leagues after the Indians appointed him for an assignment.
Gonzalez was fifth and played on the right court Monday against the Angels at Wrigley Field. Regular right-field player Jason Heyward has moved to the central field.
Gonzalez was once one of the most dreaded hitters of baseball. The triple All-Star won a batting title with an average of 336 points against Colorado in 2010. He has completed 100 races as recently as 2016.
It also offers the Cubs another option for left-handers at the top of the list. In 110 innings, Gonzalez has a batting average of .310 and a .363 percentage on the base. The Cubs' strikers struggled this year with a batting average of 0.218 and a percentage of -298 on the base.
Gonzalez will have to recover his form. The Indians abandoned him after he hit .210 with two homers and seven RBIs in 30 games.
The Cubs were in first place in the Central Division for much of May, but they are struggling recently, with the Brewers taking first place in June. The Cubs are 2-8 in their last 10 games and have not scored more than four points in their last four games.
To make room on the list of active players, the Cubs sent the paralyzed player Jim Adduci.
