Cubs close closer Brandon Morrow after feeling an elbow pain during a detox

Brandon Morrow suffered a setback in his rehabilitation following a right elbow operation and was closed until further notice.

Morrow suffered pains after pioneering earlier this week at Cubs in Mesa, Arizona, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Morrow did not have a specific schedule, but until he is announced on Saturday, he should be back with the Cubs early or mid-May. Now, it's unclear when he'll be back and with Morrow's injury history, it's probably safe to expect a prolonged absence.

"The rebound after the last outing has not been as good, so we have to back off again and slow things down," Maddon said. "It's just where he is. This is reminiscent of what was happening earlier (with Morrow). The trend was very good.

The Cubs have not seen Morrow on the mound in a major league game since July 15 in San Diego. The Cubs announced in November that he had an elbow operation after the season and he would not be ready for the start of the 2019 season.

Pedro Strop, the de facto close, has an opportunity to save 2 for 2 and kept the opponents hit at an average of .158. But without Morrow, the Cubs pen will be under the microscope, especially with the nearest independent agent, Craig Kimbrel, unsigned. The Cubs repeatedly said that they had confidence in the body of the investigators and did not intend to seek outside help.

The Cubs have received better news about starter Jon Lester, who concocted 45 shots in a simulated game on Saturday and may return this week, depending on how he recovers on Sunday. Maddon would not say when Lester would return, but would not rule out the upcoming series against the Dodgers after a "rigorous" simulation game.

"It's not impossible," Maddon said.

Xavier Cedeno (left wrist) starts a rehabilitation relay Saturday at Double-A Tennessee and Tony Barnette (right shoulder) will begin his rehabilitation mission Sunday at Triple-A Iowa.
