This cannot be how Anthony Rizzo wanted to spend his 32nd birthday.
On Sunday, the big day for the New York Yankees’ first goal was overshadowed by news that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and was due to be placed on the COVID injured list.

According to the Chicago Tribune, among those who contacted Rizzo after learning the news was his former boss, Chicago Cubs manager David Ross.
Ross texted Rizzo on Sunday to wish him a happy birthday and that he hopes he’s okay. … “Our hearts are with Rice and making sure he’s okay and the people we know,” Ross said.
Ross and the Cubs said goodbye to Rizzo on July 29 when he was traded to New York for two prospects.
Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media has more details about Rizzo, who has publicly admitted that he did not receive the COVID vaccine:
Although most Yankees are vaccinated, four players have reached COVID IL since their last week in Florida for a streak against the Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins, the others being starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery, and seeker Gary Sanchez.
“I think a lot of things came out of Florida, where we were in this wave,” said manager Aaron Boone. “But I think it’s a few of you who don’t know where and when it’s spreading. Obviously, things got back to normal for a while, and it worked for us as well. But things are certainly much more relaxed, so there is a chance even for people who have been vaccinated that it could spread.
“Of course I’m worried, but we’ll continue to do our best with it and try to navigate and manage it.”
Rizzo will be out for at least 10 days and it will be a big loss for the Yankees. Since the trade, Rizzo has reached 0.281 with three homers and six RBIs in nine games and the Yankees were 8-1 in the streak.
“He’s obviously been great for us in every way,” said Boone. “He’s obviously a little disappointed, but I hope he will rest and be well and come back as soon as possible and come back to impact us.”
