SEATTLE – For most of the start of the 2019 season, Cubs fans have been talking about the worst scenario. A little over a month later, we move quickly, and we are now talking about the best scenario.
It's because the latter played a lot in Seattle on a Wednesday afternoon almost perfect, in terms of time and performance.
The strikes were exceptional and, in one way or another, the pitch was even better. An 11-0 victory for the Cubs against the Mariners was about as perfect as possible.
The batters had six runs in the second inning to give Jon Lester a big lead. He did not even need it, beating his best game of the season more than seven shutouts, while the Cubs marked the sweep of the two games in their interleague series.
Thanks to this almost perfect effort, the Cubs continue to compensate for their departure far from perfect. Once 2-7 on the season, the team reached the peak of the season with four wins over .500 (16-12) with the triumph at T-Mobile Park.
It was an equal performance that saw seven different players race, with Javier Baez, Willson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist each to score a pair. Baez kicked off the effort in the second run with his 10th circuit of the season, which was followed by a Jason Heyward RBI single, two goals loaded, a Rizzo sacrifice flight.
Baez completed all six innings with a double RBI that allowed the Cubs to control. Rizzo and Contreras each have a place in the final innings and a pair of sacrificial robbers in the ninth place the team their third best score of the season.
That was a lot for Lester, who delivered a classic performance. He pitched seven innings of white play, allowing only one shot, while eliminating eight hitters with one goal. This effort continues a good start to the season for the pitcher, despite his loss of a few weeks due to a hamstring injury, since he now posts an average of points leading to 1.73 and a record of 2-1.
Lester was almost perfect on Wednesday, as were the batters. A dream scenario took place on a dream day in Seattle, arguably the best so far for the Cubs in a still young 2019 season.
