The Cubs are still looking for Anthony Rizzo.
Chicago manager David Ross texted former Cubs star and current Yankees first baseman on Sunday to wish him a happy birthday and make sure he was okay after Rizzo tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“Our thoughts are with [Rizzo]”Ross said.
Rizzo tested positive for the virus on Sunday – his 32nd birthday – and has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list, where he will stay for at least 10 days.
Boone said Rizzo had mild symptoms and felt “sore”.
“He’s doing fine,” Boone told reporters in New York. “He’s got symptoms, but he’s fine, but [he’s] obviously a little disappointed.
Rizzo, a cancer survivor, told media in June that he had not yet been vaccinated because he wanted to “see the data” on the vaccines. It is not known if he received the jab since these comments.
Although the Yankees have vaccinated more than 85% of their Level 1 staff, which has resulted in some restrictions being relaxed, they still had 10 players who tested positive for the virus in the past month. The majority of these were “breakthrough” cases, in which a fully vaccinated person is infected with the virus.
“I think a lot of things came out of Florida, where we were in this wave,” said manager Aaron Boone. “But I think it’s a few of you who don’t know where and when it’s spreading. Obviously, things got back to normal for a while, and it worked for us as well. But things are certainly much more relaxed, so there is a chance even for people who have been vaccinated that it could spread.
“Of course I’m worried, but we’ll continue to do our best with it and try to navigate and manage it.”
The Yankees acquired Rizzo from the Cubs on the deadline and he helped trigger an 8-1 score reaching 0.281 with three homers and six RBIs in that span.
