Cubs reportedly lost third base coach will be venerable to Red Sox

One of the game’s most beloved coaches these days, Will Venable is a frequent member of the managerial interview circuit.

The Cubs third baseman has yet to get one of those gigs, but today he got a promotion. But not with the Cubs:

Venable interviewed the Red Sox for their leadership role this year, which ultimately went to Alex Cora (back after his one-year suspension and dismissal). They must have genuinely liked Venable, however, and made that move possible. Right now, the Cubs bench coach is Andy Green, who is David Ross’ number two.

Previously, Venable was the Cubs’ first base coach and also a special front office assistant. He’s well-regarded in the game and he will remain a prime target on the managerial circuit I guess, especially after being a bench coach for the Red Sox.

Good luck to Venable in the future. Now the Cubs will need at least two new staff coaches – a new third base / away coach to replace Venable, and a new assistant coach to replace Terrmel Sledge (although this one may be an internal promotion) .
