Representative Elijah Cummings, D-MD, announced Friday his intention to issue a ten-year summons to President Trump's financial records.

According to a note on Friday, the chairman of the House of Representatives' Oversight and Reform Committee has issued a subpoena to the accounting firm Mazars USA for all records of the accounting firm regarding Trump, its revocable trust, the US Treasury. Trump organization and other interests of Trump. The subpoena also requires the accounting firm to ensure communication between one of their partners and Trump.

In February, Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified before the committee and stated that he had exaggerated his holdings in his financial statements in order to mislead lenders and investors. Cohen, who is expected to serve a three-year sentence for campaign financing crimes and lying to Congress, shared copies of several Trump financial statements.

According to Cummings' note, the statements raise serious questions as to the sincerity of Trump's financial statements.

"The committee has full authority to investigate whether the president may have been unlawful conduct before and during his tenure, to determine whether he has undisclosed conflicts of interest that could lead to an undisclosed conflict of interest. prevent impartial political decisions, respect the emoluments provisions of the Constitution, and ensure that it has properly communicated its finances to the Office of Ethics and other federal entities, "writes Cummings in his memo.

Rather than asking the committee to vote on the subpoena, Cummings said he was giving 48-hour notice to Jim Jordan, a member of the House Oversight Committee, 48 days before the issuance of the summons. Cummings said that there would be no vote because the committee would sit for two weeks.

For Jordan, Cummings' actions constituted "an astonishing abuse of the authority of this committee and a shameful mockery of the just and legitimate control he had promised to the American people just 73 days ago."

"This unprecedented action is based solely on the testimony of Michael Cohen, a convicted liar," said Jordan in a statement. "We now understand why President Cummings is refusing to keep his promise to hold Cohen accountable for his lies in front of our committee: President Cummings will not let the truth interfere with his obsession with attacking the president and the first family."

Mazars had previously rejected a request to provide the committee with financial documents on Trump. Instead, he stated that he would only cooperate if he was receiving a "friendly summons," according to Cummings.
