New York Governor Andrew Cuomo received the Founders’ Award “in recognition of his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and his masterful use of television to educate and calm people around the world” at the ceremony of the International Emmy Awards on Monday.

The ceremony was broadcast virtually Monday morning. Cuomo also held a press briefing on the coronavirus on Monday morning.

Cuomo was announced as the recipient of the award on Friday, causing significant backlash over his controversial nursing home policy that has been linked to the deaths of thousands of elderly residents.

In the early weeks of the pandemic, Cuomo was praised by Democrats and members of the media for his daily coronavirus briefings. However, the governor has since been examined for his order requiring nursing homes in his state to admit COVID-19 patients. Although that order has since been rescinded, the policy has been largely attributed to the record death toll in New York City, which includes many older people living in nursing homes.
