New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Wednesday she disagreed with incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to formally step down only after a two-week transition period.
Cuomo raised his eyebrows earlier this week after announcing he would step down in 14 days, rather than the immediate resignation demanded by many public figures after an independent investigation found the governor sexually harassed at least 11 women. At Hochul’s first press conference since Cuomo’s resignation, a reporter asked what the lieutenant governor thought about the long transition.
“This is not what I asked for,” Hochul said. “However, I look forward to a smooth transition, which he promised. He spoke to me about wanting to make sure the transition to continuity is important, that I have the opportunity to meet with representatives. Cabinet, other people as well. They considered necessary. “

“I am ready to take office like any lieutenant governor from the first hour you take the oath of office as lieutenant governor,” she added. “However, I will take advantage of this time and continue to engage with the people of New York State.”
Cuomo stepped down on Tuesday amid intense bipartisan pressure from officials at state and national levels, including U.S. senators from New York and President Biden. Prior to his resignation, Cuomo faced an impeachment inquiry into both the sexual harassment allegations and his handling of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes across the state.
Cuomo’s last day in office is August 24. Hochul will be the first female governor in the history of the state.

As governor, Hochul will inherit a difficult political climate in New York City as the state aims to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
“I have a vision, but I will continue to develop it. And at the end of the 14 days, I can’t wait to come back to a place like this and make sure that we are ready to face all of them. the challenges we face, ”added Hochul.
