Cuphead and Mugman have problems. Cuphead is sensational. The creators of the game referred to it as "Magical Wondergame", and I struggled to find a better way to describe it. It's hard not to sit and marvel. Inspired by cartoons from the 1930s, the game was created using the same techniques as the time. Whether it's cel animation or hand-drawn watercolor backgrounds, the end result is a game that impresses and surprises you from start to finish.
It's a show like no other, really. Punctuated by the jazz big band and the undeniably glorious ragtime soundtrack of composer Kristofer Maddigan, this run-and-gun action game, whether solo or in a team with a local cooperative, puts you at the heart of challenge marauder Inkwell Isle in your quest and take names.
Cuphead is difficult. We are warned not to deal with the devil, but I would consider if it could make me better at the game. It's at least accessible. The opening tutorial covers the basics and explains how to shoot, jump, dash, descend, and shoot. The most delicate move is the Parry Slap, which, in flight, allows you to cancel or interact with pink objects or projectiles. This helps your Super Meter perform more powerful EX moves and is required to restart a co-op partner after it's defeated.
There are straight steps where enemies (and bullets) come in from all directions, but whether on land or in the air on a retractable plane, Cuphead was largely created as a boss game. What about the angry vegetables that make up The Root Pack, Ribby and Croak dodges, escape under the astrological transformations of Hilda Berg or the slaughter of the monsters Baron Von Bon Bon's desserts, every boss meeting is an enervating but incredible tour de force.
It's a difficult game by design, but there are different options that can make it easier. But, as King Dice explains, bosses have fewer phases and are launching fewer attacks in your direction less often, in simple mode, but you can only collect a soul contract. a debtor only when you beat them in Regular mode. This means that the patience needed to learn the attack patterns is necessary to complete the game. Once defeated, it will unlock the Expert mode, even more heartbreaking. This increased difficulty curve may seem like an obstacle for some, but in the end, the experience is even more rewarding, even if some frustration is felt.
At each stage, your time, the end of VPs, the parries, the skills and the gold coins you collect are used to evaluate your performance. You can return to the scenes you want to improve, which your curiosity will encourage as the shopping for new items at Porkrind's Emporium opens up new styles of play. This comes mainly from the new EX Moves, with longer spans, different bullet spreads or larger damage. Maybe even an extra punch will help, but this is done at the cost of a slight weakening of your attack power. And then, there's the Bomb Smoke, which makes you temporarily invincible when you use your standard dashboard – which is easily one of the most useful abilities of the game.
It should be mentioned quickly that there are successes to unlock in the game and, with Xbox Live support in the works, I could end up rewarding you with some Gamerscore bonuses. This is – I imagine – if you have not already all unlocked previously on Xbox One or PC.
Cuphead is a creative masterpiece and a game that rightly deserves to be long remembered as a great one. It offers an exuberant gaming experience that will delight, amaze and frustrate in equal parts, woven into a world of breathtaking and meticulously crafted cartoons. He may begin to feel cruel sometimes, especially after a long session without defeating a single boss, but now having the chance to play on the move with Nintendo Switch, he is perfectly suited to players to meet such a challenge. challenge.
