Ipswich, Mass. – A Massachusetts CVS is contacting patients who have received the COVID-19 vaccine at their site to notify them of a dosing error.
The pharmacy said a limited number of patients who received the Moderna vaccine on Monday were inadvertently given lower doses than they should have received.
Carol Kennedy Hurley said she still shook her head after the pharmacist informed her of the dosing error.
“You know, you’re kind of in shock,” Hurley said.
CVS said a limited number of patients who received the vaccine on Monday at the Central Street location received 0.3 milliliters of the Moderna vaccine instead of the regular 0.5 milliliter dose.
“So I guess the basic word is trust,” Hurley said. “That’s what it really comes down to, and from the start with this whole pandemic, who do you trust?
Doctors say that despite the mess, there is no reason for patients like Hurley to receive an extra dose, and that she can still get the second vaccine next month as scheduled.
“We know that because we are humans, mistakes can happen, especially when we try to vaccinate with two different vaccines,” said Dr Gabriela Andujar Vasquez.
CVS issued a written statement which reads in part, “We have contacted all affected patients to apologize and answer any questions they may have” and “we have reported this to the appropriate regulatory bodies.”
Hurley said no one had apologized to her.
“They just gave me the information and it was really nonchalant,” she said.
CVS said it has since implemented changes to prevent future accidents.
