CVS will prohibit customers from openly carrying firearms in its stores, said the chain of pharmacies Thursday. The announcement of the pharmacy chain follows that of its rival, Walgreens. And both decisions are just the latest examples of the effect of coaching that Walmart's open-door change policy seems to have caused in retail.

According to a statement posted on the official website of the chain of pharmacies Twitter, CVS joins "a growing number of companies asking our customers, other than authorized law enforcement, not to bring firearms into our stores."

The pharmacy chain is the last major retailer to have changed its firearms policy as a result of Walmart's decision to ban open inventories and reduce its ammunition offerings. Kroger and Walgreens have also followed suit with regard to open door policy.

The tendency of retailers to ask customers to refrain from opening bags has drawn the warmth of the right commentators.

However, a recent survey by the market research company CivicScience indicates that gun change policies do not negatively affect the desire of buyers to visit Walmart. And, if retail companies continue to follow, it's not clear whether a boycott will even be possible.
